Outline of projects dealing with art in public space in Sharjah, one of the seven United Arabian Emirates.
August 20th - September 10th 2004
"Art is the quickest way to the understanding between cultures", proclaimed His Highness Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al-Quassimi of Sharjah in February 2000.
The third stage in the current cultural collaboration between Arabian, Persian and Danish artists and scientists will be shown at Galleri Specta in Copenhagen from August 20th until September 10th. The exhibition consists of proposals and models for a number of projects pertaining to specific and fictive public spaces in Sharjah.
"Moonlight Garden", one of the major projects, was already presented in the spring to the Ruler of Sharjah, His Highness Sheik Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al-Qassimi. Encouraged by great interest from the ruler, the artists and architects will now be able to present a more detailed model of the garden.
All projects are part of a larger educational program of cultural exchange known as "The Nomad Academy", which was agreed upon between the Emirate of Sharjah and the Royal Danish Academy of Art this spring.
The works include photos and drawings for billboards, a model and sketches of a "Moonlight Garden", prints of a project entitled "Light Rope", and models of sculptures designed for roundabouts. A number of projects are the result of cooperation between Arabian, Danish and Persian artists and scientists. This cooperation is built upon common visions and the knowledge that, in spite of great cultural differences, it is possible to work together in the fields of art, architecture and education.
Participainting artist and scientists are Tarek Al-Ghoussein, Karima Al Shomely, Khalil Abdul Wahid, Anette Abrahamsson, Salim Abdali, Abdul Sattar Al Azzawi, Nasser Moaedi Jorfi, Abdul Rahim Salem, Jane Havshøj, Mogens Møller, Flemming Brantbjerg, Lars Bukdahl, Annemette Larsen, Dorte Dahlin, Stig Brøgger, Hans Feldthusen, Niels Peter Flint, Øivind Nygård ,Henrik B. Andersen and Superflex.
